According to "Towne Genealogy 1630-1901"(p.92): "Eli can claim the honor and distinction of being the first permanent settler in the town of East Dover, ME, in 1803, and one daughter, born in 1805, was the first child born there. She was living only a few years ago. Eli was a blacksmith by trade, and, growing up with the town, had all the business, and became quite wealthy for those days. He was interested in all matters pertaining to the welfare of his chosen town. The first religious meeting was held in his house. He was an officer in the first military company of the town, was justice of the peace, and often held other important offices in the town. He died there, October 21, 1852." Born in Temple, Hillsborough, New Hampshire.

History of Piscataquis County, Maine: From Its Earlist Settlement by Amasa Loring: p. 32, "Eli Towne and wife were wont to that, on their last day's journey to their new home, that same depth [8 inches] of snow fell. This was assuredly May 8, 1803."

1820 census of Plantation No 1-6th Range, ME lists him with 2 males under 10, 1 male 16-26, 2 males over 45, 3 females under 10, 2 females 10-16, 1 female 26-45 with 3 individuals involved in agriculture;

1850 census Dover, Piscataquis, Maine p293: Eli Towne, age 75, blacksmith, born in New Hampshire, listed as head of household with sons, Leander, 20 and Obid, 23 and Obid's wife, Lorana, 24 and his daughter, Viola, 4.
