189 Private D Kennedy, Marshall's Horse. Marshall's Horse was mainly composed of the mounted portions of the First City (Grahamstown) Volunteers and Uitenhage Rifle Volunteers. In Feb and Mar 1900 they were part of the main army advance from the Modder River to Bloemfontein seeing a great deal of fighting. On 7 Mar 1900 they fought at the battle of Poplar's Grove. The strength of the corps when it arrived at Bloemfontein was 12 officers, 245 men, and 231 horses. During the advance to Pretoria, they were part of the force that cleared the Boer forces from their stronghold at Thabanchu and at Israel's Poort with engagements on 5 Jun 1900 at Schippen's Farm (1 killed, 5 wounded), at Doornkop, south-west of Johannesburg, on 29 May 1900. After the fall of Pretoria they took part in the battle of Diamond Hill, east of Pretoria, on 11-13 Jun 1900. In Aug-Sep 1901 they were employed about Krugersdorp and in the Gatsrand, andin Oct-Dec 1900 they were with Barton in the Frederickstad district. At the end of 1900 and beginning of 1901 Boer forces reinvaded the Cape Colony and the greater part of Marshall's Horse, were brought south to protect their own colony in the columns of Colonel Crabbe and other leaders. Private Kennedy died of enteric fever (typhoid) in Sutherland Hospital on 16 May 1902.
