Angeline Freeman Sturgis, 98, died peacefully on Saturday evening, September 10, 2022 at Westminster Health and Rehabilitation. A resident of Westminster Manor since August 2009, she moved into Westminster Health and Rehabilitation wing in 2018 where she continued to receive loving care and enjoyed living in the community.

Born in Rutherfordton, NC on August 23, 1924 to the late Spurgeon Lee Freeman and the late Dexter Grace Forney Freeman, Angeline grew in a family of three girls, each a musician in her own right. The family moved to Rock Hill so that Angeline and her older sister could attend Winthrop College.

Angeline graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in piano performance in 1945. While singing in the choir of the First Baptist Church she met William "Bill" Ira Sturgis, also from Rock Hill.

The two married on September 18, 1945 upon Bill's return from serving in Germany with the US Army Air Corps in World War II. The couple moved to Clemson where Angeline taught piano and Bill completed his degree, after which they established their home in Rock Hill, SC.

Mrs. Sturgis was dedicated to her family, her church, her many piano students and advocacy for the arts in the community. She served in the Fine Arts Association which preceded the Rock Hill Arts Council. She was a charter member of the Rock Hill Piano Teachers Forum serving several terms as president, 1978, 1987. She also served as president of The SC Piano Festival Association from 1982-1983.

She was a proud alumnus of Winthrop College and a constant advocate for its music program as well as the Walter B. Roberts scholarship fund for piano students. Mrs. Sturgis and her husband, were charter members of Oakland Baptist Church, Rock Hill, where Angeline directed the Junior and Youth Choirs for 15 years from September 1961-October 1976 and where she and her husband sang in the Chancel Choir for decades. She also enjoyed teaching in the primary age sunday school classes at Oakland.

Her family, friends and students will remember the intensity of her commitment to do any task to the best of her ability and to "use the gifts God has given me" usually mixing smiles and laughter with an iron will. While a resident at Westminster, she continued to encourage, plan and lead the singing at Wednesday devotionals.

Mrs. Sturgis was preceded in death by her husband, William Ira Sturgis; her parents, Spurgeon Lee and Dexter Forney Freeman; two sisters, Marjorie Alewine and Mary Elizabeth Blankstein; her daughter-in-law, Susan Canty Adicks Sturgis.

Mrs. Sturgis is survived by three children, four grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and thirteen beloved nieces and nephews.
