Son of Nehemiah and Hannah Ballard Abbot. He married Hannah Frye 29 Sep 1793 in Dracut, MA. They had 2 children, Nehemiah in 1794 and Lydia Clark in 1797. Hannah died 12 Oct 1821.

In Andover, MA, 14 May 1822 Abiel married Chloe Manning Hawley, widow of William Hawley. Chloe was the sister-in-law of Abiel's sister Hannah who had married Samuel Hawley, William's brother, both sons of Joseph Hawley. Hannah died in 1811, William in 1819 and Samuel in 1829.

Abiel died intestate and was a fairly wealthy farmer when he died. His only son Nehemiah and his widow Chloe both declined to administer his estate and requested that John Flint, his daughter Lydia's husband, be appointed administrator, which was approved. He had a large inventory of items as well as real estate that totaled to almost $8900.

It is interesting to note that in the probate papers there was no final distribution of the estate. His widow Chloe received $1575 in money " for acquiescence of real and personal estate" but she didn't receive a dower. There is also no mention of his daughter Lydia receiving any bequeath and the only other mention of son Nehemiah is on the back of the accounting where Stephen Abbot states he calls himself "guardian to Nehemiah Abbot".
