Herbert Cohen and his wife Anneliese lived at Ferdinand-Wallbrecht-Strasse 20 (today no. 38), in Hannover, Germany, where he owned a clothing business. Due to the boycott and other difficulties faced by Jewish-run businesses, the company went bankrupt in 1937. In September of that year he and Anneliese fled to Amsterdam. Following the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands in 1942, they were arrested and placed in the Westerbork camp. From there they were deported to Auschwitz and murdered.
