Alfred was one of at least eight children of William and Sarah Barker. He married Sarah Sutcliffe in Halifax on 14 June 1869 and they had at least nine children, two of whom were born before their marriage. Alfred's sister Priscilla married on the same day at the same church.
Sarah died in 1899 and is buried at Luddenden Dean Wesleyan Methodist Chapelyard, about two miles south of Wainstalls.
Alfred is interred here with his son Thomas, daughter Mary and other family members.
