Donald F. Abrams, Sr., 80, of Surry, died Saturday evening, March 2, 2013 following a period of declining health.

He was born August 6, 1932 in Keene to the late James A. and Grace E. (Dunton) Abrams.

Donald attended Keene schools where he excelled in sports. He also played baseball for The American Legion.

He married Avis M. Robinson in a ceremony at the Keene Church of Nazarene on May 12, 1951.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1953 aboard the Destroyer, USS Macon. In his youth he was an avid ski jumper and later served on the National Ski Patrol. Don enjoyed snowmobiling, motorcycling and vegetable gardening.

He was a longtime member and lay minister in the Church of the Nazarene and was instrumental in various ministries and outreach activities in his local church.

He retired in 1994 after 45 years with Arthur Whitcomb Inc. where he was employed as a loader operator and dispatcher.

He was predeceased by a son: Dana M. Abrams and a brother: Roger "Whitey" A. Abrams.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, March 8, 2013 at 10 AM at the Keene Church of the Nazarene. Calling hours will be held Thursday, March 7, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Fletcher Funeral Home.

Burial will take place at the Mountain View Cemetery in the spring.
