" Grandson of Edgar Cayce dies in apparent drowning accident
A day at the oceanfront turned tragic when a man from a well-known family in Virginia Beach died in an accident witnessed by his 8 year-old son.
58-year-old Gregory Cayce - grandson of famed psychic Edgar Cayce - apparently drowned in the waters off 89th Street in Virginia Beach on Sunday.
Witnesses say it was a horrific sight on the beach. A man pulled from the water not breathing and all happening right in front of his eight year old son.
The red flags were waving Sunday afternoon at Virginia Beach warning swimmers of the dangerous currents and surf. It was the surf that might have taken the life of Cayce.
Beach goers say Cayce was on a boogie-board catching some waves.
"He was going down a wave and went over the top and hit his head. He didn't come up" said beach-goer Dan Barrows.
That's when witnesses jumped to his rescue.
"About 5 or 6 guys dragged him out got him on shore. I thought he was breathing but I think he just had too much water in his lungs" he said.
"A bunch of people came up trying to help him. They were doing mouth to mouth for at least 10 minutes" said witness Matt Frazier.
Cayce was then taken an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. WAVY News spoke with his friends and family Sunday night and they say Cayce was a loving father.
He was at he beach with eight year-old son Matthew at the time of the accident.
Cayce is the grandson of Edgar Cayce, founder of the Association for Research and Enlightment, and a Hampton Roads resident, who became a national celebrity as a psychic and clairavoyent.
Back at the beach, witnesses still can't believe what happened.
"It was just horrible seeing his wife like that i'm assuming it was his wife. I don't know an older lady just praying on her knees. It's horrible" said Frazier
The Cayce Family released this statement:
"Greg died quickly and quietly today while doing what he loved most in the world, playing with his beloved son Matthew and catching waves in the ocean. A memorial service will be held at the A.R.E. in Virginia Beach on a day to be announced."
The family tells us they are setting up an education found for Matthew. We'll give you those details when they're finalized. "
