His Cherokee nickname was given to him by his father for the clu-clu birds (known in English as martins, like his middle name) that were nesting at the Gulager home at the time of his birth.

He studied acting in Paris under Jean Louis Barrault, a French actor and director. In 1955, he made his acting debut on the television series "Omnibus." He went on to appear in such television series as "The Untouchables," "The Tall Man," "Wagon Train," "The Virginian," "San Francisco International Airport," "Ironside," "Hawaii Five-O," "The Fall Guy," "Murder, She Wrote," and "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman." In 1964, he made his film debut in "The Killers." His later film credits included such titles as "The Last Picture Show," (1971) "The Other Side of Midnight," (1977) "Touched by Love," (1980) "The Return of the Living Dead," (1985) "Teen Vamp," (1989) and "Feast." (2005)
