Son of Eleazor and Rebecca Kitley Hoag of Marion County, Indiana. He was survived by his siblings, Lydia Hoag, Amos Hoag, Anne Hoag, Francis Hoag, Morris Hoag, Eleazer Hoag, William Hoag, George Hoag and Elizabeth Hoag. He was never married.
He enlisted in the Union Army on August 11, 1862 and was assigned to the 100th Indiana Infantry Co. K.
He was killed on December 31, 1862 at the Battle of Holly Springs in Holly Springs, Mississippi. He was buried in the Holly Springs Cemetery and a marker was placed (according to a letter written by a soldier in his company). Now Hill Crest Cemetery.
