Singer. He was best known for being one of the founding members of the 1960s Chicago soul Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member group The Impressions. In the 1950s, he, along with brothers Arthur and Richard Brooks, Curtis Mayfield, founded the music group originally called the Roosters, but later changed to the Impressions after baritone Jerry Butler's addition. In 1958, they had their breakthrough hit "For Your Precious Love." They would remain a top group in the 1960s, known for their gospel-styled harmonies and socially conscious songs. Their hit songs like the widely covered "People Get Ready," along with "Gypsy Woman," "Keep on Pushing," "It's All Right" and "We're A Winner" were written by Curtis Mayfield, who left the group in 1970. The group were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 and seven years later, "People Get Ready" was voted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. He, along with Fred Cash, who was a part of the Impressions, and several solo singers, continued to perform together until 2018.
