Edward a Civil War veteran, a son of Dr. Elisha James and Lydia Young (Little) of Scituate, and paternal grandson of Benjamin James and Sarah (Holmes) of Scituate.

On 12/16/1847, Edward at age 30 1st m: Laura Ann (Sylvester), age 19, daughter of James Sylvester, Jr. and Elizabeth (Young). Laura died suddenly from a heart problem in 1859. No children discovered.

On 8/22/1860 at age 43 Edward 2nd m: Serena Charlotte (Litchfield) (Chubbuck), age 30, daughter of Nathaniel Litchfield, III and Deborah (Clapp) of Scituate, and widow of Martin T. Chubbuck of Scituate, MA, with whom she had children. Deborah (Clapp) Litchfield (FAG#147504583), daughter of James Clapp (FAG#142696141) and Elizabeth (Jenkins) (FAG#142690790) of Scituate, MA. Nathaniel Litchfield, III, son of Nathaniel Litchfield, Jr. and Sarah (Mott) of Scituate, MA, and paternal grandson of Nathaniel Litchfield and Priscilla (Nash) of Scituate, MA.

Edward and Serena had a daughter, Laura Serena James, who died in 1862 as an infant at 7mos.; she is buried behind Edward's stone.

At age 44, Edward, a carpenter by trade, enlisted on 5/25/1862 as Pvt. with Co. K, MA Volunteers 7th Inf. Regt., m/o: 1/22/1864, transferred to Co. H Veterans Reserve Corps 13th Inf. on 1/22/1864; rank in Pvt, rank out Corp., wounded but survived the war. Per 1870 Census they are both listed in Scituate, MA with Serena's children Julia, James T., and Daniel L. Chubbuck, along with her widowed mother, Deborah (Clapp) Litchfield, aged 83. Serena survived Edward, collected his Pension in 1879 and in 1890, and still resided in Scituate as of the late 1890s.

Edward and his first wife Laura are buried here, as is Edward and Serena's infant daughter, Laura, buried behind Edward.

Burial location for Serena Charlotte (Litchfield) (Chubbuck) James is still undiscovered; she was born 1823, d.3/6/1896, Scituate, MA, aged 73. "Serena C. James of Scituate" signed her Will on 2/7/1895; she named/bequeathed "all my personal and real estate to my daughter Julia A. Towne of Scituate".
