Sinon was born to Bridget (Houlihan) and Michael Black (then a constable with the Royal Irish Constabulary) in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry, Ireland, on 8 January 1886.
He left Kilrush in 1902 to work in London as a letter sorter at the General Post Office. Although no official military records have been discovered, Martin apparently enlisted in the Irish Guards in 1914 and saw service in France.
After the war he returned to London and was referred to as "Simon". He continued his employment as a letter sorter with the GPO until his death. He remained a bachelor all his life.
Sinon died on 19 July 1924 at the age of 38. His cause of death was recorded as:
Syncope from Haemoptysis
1. Pulmonary Tuberculosis 1 year
2. Chronic hypertrophy and dilation of the heart.
His death was registered by his brother, Martin Black, on 22 July 1924, and he was buried the following day at St Pancras and Islington Cemetery in London (Camden), England.
