St Patrick Church, Aurora, NY page 18:
Jan 19, 1879 marriage of John, son of Thomas Heffernan and Elizabeth Lynch,
and Mary Ann, daughter of Thomas Gillespie and Ann Reilly.

John was described in 1995 by Thomas Farel HEFFERNAN "...as looking a lot like William FAULKNER, was patriarchal and sensitive, a community minded person, and a Catholic of his time and place -- i.e. Irish, firm in orthodoxy, and ever conscious of the contempt that even some friends had for what he believed in..."

A 1904 Cayuga Co. NY Farmer's Book said: "…LOCUST GROVE, of one hundred and twenty acres, on the Sherwood and Aurora road, within one and one half miles of Aurora and fifteen miles of Auburn, is owned by John Heffernan. Postoffice address, Aurora, R. F. D. Its products are general, with dairying as a specialty, the milk being sent to the Aurora Creamery. Another specialty is the raising of poultry, having always on hand a large stock of White Leghorns. Small fruits abound in great variety, and the water supply is ample. This property was settled at an early date and was known as the Barber Farm, and was sold to Humphrey Howland in 1853, at his death it was inherited by his heirs and came into possession of the present owner in 1896. Mr. Heffernan is a native of Cayuga County, born in 1850, and married Miss Mary A. Gillespie, a native of New York City, in 1879. Their family consists of three sons and three daughters. Mr. Heffernan is Trustee of School No. 4, and Overseer of the Poor of the Town of Ledyard … SHADY LAWN is another fine farm in the town, owned by John Heffernan. It comprises seventy-eight acres, on Lot 34, on the Aurora road, and within sixteen miles of Auburn. The location is one of the best, having a commanding view of ten miles of Cayuga Lake. Attention is given to general farming and the raising of hay and grain. The water supply is sufficient for all the needs of the farm. The place derives its name from the number of shade trees on the lawn, which add to the attractiveness of the home. It was formerly owned by Joshua Baldwin and was inherited from his estate by his children and grandchildren and from them to the present owner in 1900. The farm is in an excellent state of cultivation and the buildings in good repair."
