Harrison Smith

COLUMBUS, Kan. — Harrison "Shorty” Smith, 73, formerly of 516 N. Indiana Ave., died at 11:48 a.m. Friday at Maude Norton Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since Aug. 3 and after a three-year illness. Mr. Smith resided at a Columbus nursing home.

He was born June 10, 1912, in Wier and lived there until 1942, when he moved to Columbus. He retired in 1974 after 32 years’ service with the Northeastern Oklahoma Railroad. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He married Mable Bellman Dec. 23, 1933, at Lamar. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Margie Stockton, Neosho, Mo.; three brothers, John Smith, Pittsburg, Walter Smith, Brookville, Ind., and Marion Smith, Wier; five sisters, Ora Fuller, Kansas City, Mo., Esther Dean, Galena, Dorothy Whisenhunt, Raytown, Mo., Agnes Lee, Columbus, and Mary Ramzey, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Hosey Hill Cemetery, Wier. The Rev. Earl Detwiler will officiate. Burial is under the direction of Jorden-Murdock Funeral Home.
