Donald J. Frakes, 81, of Terre Haute died at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, in Union Hospital.

He was born Feb. 13, 1926, in Fairbanks to Donald Frakes Sr. and Nellie Pinkston Frakes.

He was a self-employed logger.

Survivors include his wife, Polly Ann Hampton Frakes; five daughters, Sara Jo Hendrickson and husband Joe of Center Point, Rita Sue Thomas and husband Jim, and Vickie Lynn Frakes, all of Farmersburg, Linda Sue Frakes of Terre Haute, and Cathy Sue Elkins of Sullivan; three sons, Larry Dean Frakes of Terre Haute, Terry Lee Frakes of Farmersburg and William Donald Frakes and wife Allison of Vandalia, Ind.; 18 grandchildren, Kim Hendrickson, David Frakes, Jeff Frakes, Tina Elkins, Angela Arnett, Justin Copelan, Kristin Copelan, Shane Frakes, Angel Frakes, Samantha Jo Frakes, Charles Frakes, Mason Miller, Tabatha Elkins, Jamie Cornwell, Shawnee Houser, Mike Rutruger, Kelly Frakes, and Michelle Frakes Warnock; and a brother, Ed Frakes. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Lee Frakes; a grandson, Michael Wayne Copelan; a brother, Bob Frakes; and four sisters, Juanita Huff, Betty Wilson, Irene Bridgewater and Earline Frakes.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, was an avid coon hunter, and competed in horse and pony pulls.

Graveside services are 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Westlawn Cemetery in Farmersburg, with graveside military services conducted by Lawton-Byrum Post 972 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Visitation is 10 a.m. until noon Thursday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive.
