Virgil Edward Adams

Virgil Edward Adams of Eugene, Oregon passed away in his sleep in the early morning hours of June 9th, 2022. Virgil suffered a serious fall in May that required a hospital stay where he contracted COVID, which he successfully fought. The need for in-house physical therapy necessitated a stay in a rehab facility where he was making good progress recovering from his injuries. However, he ultimately died from heart-weakened causes.

Virgil was born and raised in Marietta, Ohio to Archie and Emma Reel Adams on August 18, 1928. He was one of 5 sons and one daughter born to his parents.

He served 3½ years in the US Navy. He joined when he was 17 (claimed he was 18 on his application).

Virgil met Carol Alspaugh in Portland on a leave and they married on October 22, 1950. They had 3 sons, Ronald Edward, Raymond Watson and Allen Dean. They divorced in 1960.

In 1955 Virgil attended Oregon City Vocational School to learn auto body work. He and a partner started A & M Body Shop January 5, 1956. A short time later his partner decided to become a minister and Virgil bought him out.

Virgil met Ilsa Brandon in April of 1961 and they were married September 5, 1961. Virgil had custody of his 3 sons and took on Ilsa's 4 children Kathie, Walt, John and Susan. He adopted all 4 a short time later.

Ilsa joined Virgil at the shop in 1961 and they ran the business together until July 1999 (they sold the business in May of 1999). The shop was regarded as one of the most modern shops in the Pacific Northwest in 1986. The shop featured a water-wash downdraft paint booth from Italy. It was also the largest shop in the area for several years. Virgil and Ilsa purchased several rental properties over the years and owned a second residence in Florence and Blue River for decades. Virgil did almost all the maintenance on all the properties.

Virgil was an active member of Berean Baptist Church for decades serving as a trustee and he also helped them manage their investment properties. He and Ilsa joined Grace Community Fellowship this year.

In 1968 Virgil and Ilsa moved into a home out in the country on what ended up being 88 acres. He raised up to 35 cattle annually for the years they lived there. After the kids were all out of the house Virgil and Ilsa moved into town. Virgil was still always working on a project whether working at a rental, helping his children or grandchildren with a project, and/or working on and financially supporting Christian organizations and The Eugene Mission.

He was a member of the Messengers of Truth that made and distributed the yard signs celebrating Easter and Christmas and the banners posted in town. He was a strong man of faith and read his Bible morning and night. He was very generous and was known to give away real silver dollars for good service at a restaurant, someone just looking like they could use a lift, or someone new he met. It was one of his favorite things to do.

Virgil and Ilsa traveled all over the US and the world to Japan, Italy, Germany, Hong Kong, Australia, Fiji, Africa, Egypt, Columbia, and Panama. They enjoyed several cruises. For his 80th birthday, he took any of his children and their spouse that wanted to go on an Alaskan cruise. For all who went it was one of the most cherished memories of their lives.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Hilda Ward, Wilbert, Delbert, Harold and Floyd.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Ilsa. He is also survived by his children Kathie Robidou (John) from Eugene, Ron Adams (Julie) from Anchorage, AK, Walt Brandon (Barbara) from Aloha, OR, Ray Adams (Belinda) from Sacramento, CA , John Adams from Eugene, Susan Kellogg (Vern) from Veneta and Allen Adams, from Eugene. Additionally he is survived by his grandchildren Jackie Hawks Austin, Julie Adams, Jeff Robidou, Samantha Lee, Stephanie Monroe, Randy Adams, Amy Hagel, Eric Brandon, Brock Brandon, Kelly Rae Ruiz, and Jeanna Lansing, 24 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and nieces Patty & Shirley from Marietta, Ohio.

Virgil lived a full life that he was very thankful for. He was hard-working and a good provider for his family. Not only was he a good provider, but he showed his family that he cared in so many ways. We are thankful he is no longer in pain but will miss our times to be with him. We will hold him in our hearts and try to live up to his example.

Private burial service was held June 21, 2022 at West Lawn Memorial Park. Celebration of Life will be held July 16, 2022 at Grace Community Church at 2 pm. Donations in his memory may be made to Eugene Mission or Grace Community Fellowship.
