Samuel married Edith White and settled in the Hutt. They had 4 children.
He was very involved in the town and a member of the Wellington racing club, the trotting club, Federated Farmers, Lodge etc.
He grew many vegetables on the 100 acre farm that he lived on and managed for Reuben King (situated on the main road of Taita) which he gave to friends and neighbours of the district during the depression.
Samuel died of gastroenteritis aged 70, 10 years before his wife Edith who is buried here beside him.
