Leonard Downs Shepley was a successful merchant in Portland. The daughters in this plot are Frances (Fannie) Shepley, 1850-1871 and Sarah Chase Shepley, wife of Dr. James Spalding. Sarah was born May 10, 1853, the twin sister of Louisa Bell Shepley. Louisa married William F. Duff of Massachusetts, and they moved to Saint Paul, MN, where he was a lawyer. He died Feb. 6, 1911.
Also a lawyer who settled in Saint Paul was the youngest child, Ether Shepley, named after his grandfather, Justice Ester Sheply, who was a U.S. senator. Ether married Sophia Perrin. He was born in Portland Sep. 29, 1862, married Sophia in Saint Paul Dec. 4, 1889, and died there Jan. 2, 1917.
Daughter Mary Shepley, who died at the age of 17 months in 1858, is buried in this plot at Evergreen, having been removed from Eastern Cemetery.
