Sarah Shepley Spalding, wife of Dr. James A. Spalding, died Thursday evening at her home In Portland after an illness of several months. She was Just n few days short of 69 years old.
She was descended from the famous Shepley family of Groton, Mass, and Saco, and her grandfather, Ether Shepley was for many years chief justice of Maine. By an odd coincidence death twice visited the Shepley family Thursday, as Dexter Tiffany of St. Louis, Mo., who married Miss Annie Shepley, daughter of the late General Shepley, died at the Phillips house in Boston.
Mrs. Spalding's father was Leonard Downes Shepley of Portland and her mother was Frances Chase also of Portland. There was for many years no more charming sight in Portland than to see the Shepley twins, Sarah and Louise (now Mrs. Duff of St. Paul) walking on Congress street to the high school, or on State street to the cathedral at St. Luke's parish.
Mrs. Spalding lived in Portland until the sudden death of her father, but came back from Boston on her marriage to Dr. Spalding in 1882, and for the rest of her life was his devoted companion, and daily helper. Without her he accomplished nothing, and without her he went nowhere on vacations or travels.
