Edward C. Bixby Sr., 88, of 2009 Brewerton Road, Mattydale, died last night at his home after a long illness. He was a retired building contractor and also had been a machinist with the former Easy Washing Machine Corp. of Syracuse. Mr. Bixby invented an automatic quilting machine and a machine for the dipping and drying of candles used by several candle companies. Born in Lamott, Mich., Mr. Bixby lived in the Syracuse area 70 years, and Mattydale 53 years. He was a member of Centerville Masonic Lodge, 648. Mr. Bixby is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sarah Crandall Bixby; four daughters, Mrs. Thelma Riano of Phoenix, Mrs. Paul Purdy of San Leandro, Calif., Mrs. Joseph Ringwood of North Syracuse, and Mrs. Paul Lewis of Merion, Pa.; a son, Raymond W. Bixby of Syracuse; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Melick and Mrs. Veda Montgomery, both of Bad Axe, Mich.; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Janice Bixby of Clay; 19 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Goddard and Crandall Funeral Home, the Rev. Norman Morris officiating. Burial will be in North Syracuse Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
