Lawrence was the son of William P. 'Bill' Anderson and Mary Catherine Arwood. He appeared in the 1870 census with them, living in Sugarfork Township, Macon County, along with sister Matilda. By 1880, the family lived in Ellijay, Macon County, where Lawrence works on the farm. Siblings Matilda, Ruemma, John and Robert Posey were also in the household.

By 1900, Lawrence was married and he and wife Ritta were living in Forneys Creek, Swain County with their children Eva and Charlotte. Lawrence continued to work as a farmer. In 1910, the family is living in Waynesville, Haywood County, where Lawrence does odd jobs. Eva and Charlotte remained in the household with Lawrence and Ritta.

By 1920, Lawrence and Ritta had moved to Sylva, Jackson County, where Lawrence worked at a lumber yard. Ritta died later that same year. Lawrence died in 1925 in Waynesville, where his daughter Charlotte lived.
