Coleman Caldwell Hatfield was born in Logan on September 25, 1926, and was the son of the late Coleman Alderson and Bertha Moss Caldwell Hatfield. He passed away on January 14, 2008, at CAMC General Hospital after a short illness.

Coleman was preceded in death by his first wife of 55 years, Arthelia Bird Hatfield, and his second wife of four years, Virginia Hall Brand Hatfield. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Aileen Hatfield and Christine Hatfield Lilly.

Coleman Hatfield graduated from Logan High School, Concord College and the Illinois College of Optometry. At thee Illinois College of Optometry he was a professor and chairman of the vision therapy and children's clinic. He was the author of the vision therapy book "The Joy of Optometry." Coleman was a member of several state and regional health committees. He was chairman of the Logan County Board of Health and the West Virginia State Board of Health. He served as councilman for the city of Logan in the early 60s and the in the late 70s. He served as president of the West Virginia Optometric Association. He was a member of the examination board of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development, which is the certifying body in vision development. Coleman was named West Virginia author of the year for his book, "The Tale of the Devil," about his great-grandfather, Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield. Coleman was active in the First Christian Church of Logan and the Hometown Christian Church in Chicago. He was a high school Sunday school teacher and youth leader with his wife, Arthelia. He taught the men's Bible class in his later years. He also served as an elder and trustee. He practiced optometry in Chicago and Logan with his daughter, Dr. Arabel E. Hatfield, and his son, Dr. R. Mark Hatfield, until his retirement.

Coleman is survived by two daughters, Dr. Arabel Hatfield of Logan and Nancy Simpson of Park Forest, Illinois; one son, Dr. R. Mark (Monica) Hatfield of Charleston; one sister, Annabel (Claude) Goode of Pittsburgh, Pa.; three stepchildren, Ann Brand and Frank (Judy) Brand Jr. of Prattville, Alabama, and Michael (Sharon) Brand of Jacksonville, Fla.; five grandchildren, Meghan (Ed) Hatfield Yanacek of Baltimore, Md., Mary and Makenzie Hatfield of Charleston, Jared Simpson of De Kalb, Illinois, and Chad Simpson of Normal, Illinois; four stepgrandchildren, Wesley (Kimberly) Brand of Birmingham, Alabama, and Nicole Brand, Jason Roberts, and Heather (Rob) Roberts Fox of Jacksonville, Florida; four stepgreat-grandchildren, two "adopted" grandsons, Andres Vega of Ecuador and Bernardo Castellanos of Mexico; several special nieces and nephews; and Stephen Browning who was like a son to Coleman.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 17, at the First Christian Church, Logan, with Dr. Charles M. Wood officiating. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in Athens Cemetery, Athens.

Honorary pallbearers include Rex Browning, Bill Browning, Joe Godby, Bill Bailey, Kenneth Wilson, Tim Rollins and John Kosher.

Active pallbearers include Rick Wilton, Mike McNulty, Ed Yanacek, Mark Mareske, Phillip McCane, Harry Hunter, Jim Guy and James L. Ferrell II.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Honaker Funeral Home in Logan and one hour prior to services at the church.
