Sarah Elizabeth Smith was born Nov 3, 1808 in Spartanburg District, South Carolina. She went with her parents to Tennessee in 1819 at the age of 11. The family the moved to Illinois in 1829. She was small built, with black hair and dark eyes. She possessed a quiet disposition and was noted for her industry, honesty, and integerity. She felt a deep sence of responsibility to the Creator. Betsy married Samuel H. Craig, Jan 20, 1831 at her parents farm near Salem, Marion County, Illinois. The Craig home burned and 50 friends rebuilt it in one week. Samuel Craig died in 1852 and was buried in Cockrell Cem., Marion Co., Illinois. After his death, Betsy lived with her son, James Craig, at Iola, Illinois. Later she went to Riley, Kansas to live with her daughter, Mary Craig-Nixon. Betsy died Feb 27, 1876 on Mill Creek at her daughter Mary's house. Her union with Samuel Craig resulted in 11 children: William Smith 1832-1902, James C. 1833-1900, Aclana H. 1836-1836, Solomon 1837-1864, John Franklin 1839-1897, Melissa Adeline 1841-1869, Felix Grundy 1843-1912, Gilliam Ann 1843-1922, Mary Elizabeth 1848-1922, Martha Savilla 1850-1850, and Samuel Houston 1852-1872.
