Folk Singer, Songwriter. Nicknamed "The Queen of the Beatniks," she was an important figure of the early folk music genre. She began singing during her teenage years and after she was educated at Rosary College and later the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she relocated to San Diego where she got her start on the Coffee Club circuit and on one occasion, she opened for controversial comedian Lenny Bruce. Her break as a recording artist happened after she joined the folk group "Dave Guard and the Whiskeyhill Singers" with who she recorded and album in 1962. Some of these songs were featured in the 1962 motion picture "How the West Was Won." She recorded the single "High Flying Bird" (1963) which was made famous by "Jefferson Airplane" with their performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. During the course of her career, she performed in the motion picture "Hootenanny Hoot" (1963), in addition to the TV programs "The Judy Garland Show" and "The Mike Douglas Show." She was formerly married to musician Jerry Yester.
