Note: Known as the man who knew no stranger!

Our loving husband, father, great-grandfather, business associate and friend passed away May 25, 2003.

Lloyd Winward, 74, having fulfilled the blessing given to him the day of his birth, of living a long and productive life. He was not expected to live more than 24 hours for he had been born with double clubbed feet, hip deformities and in the womb his legs had been crumpled upwards to his face.

Lloyd was born in Davis LDS Ward area of Vernal, Utah, July 11, 1928, the son of William Henry "Men" Winward and Hannah Merle Karren Winward.

Courageously battling physical challenges from his birth, Loyd was a kind and compassionate man, who lived life to the fullest - always willing to help others, regardless of their need or situation in life.

As a young child, he lived in the Glines area on the Winward family farm. At this time, his older siblings provided him with special care and pulled him around in a wagon because of the casts on his feet. His family later moved into town where Lloyd continued attending school, graduating from Uintah High School in 1946. After graduation, he attended classes at the University of Utah. On May 24, 1951, Lloyd married Alta Rae Weeks, a Vernal resident and daughter of Otis Heber Weeks and Jennie Noel Weeks. Through the years, they have supported each other in their family, community and church-related responsibilities.

At the age of 13, he began working in the 7-11 Cafe owned by Warren Belcher. Warren taught Lloyd how to peel potatoes. Gifted in business. Lloyd always gave credit to Stella Harris Oaks, Electa Caldwell and Evelyn Slaugh, teachers at Uintah High School, who helped him develop his skills in public speaking, accounting and typing. With the help of Electa Caldwell, Lloyd began an accounting business, keeping books for several local businesses. Lloyd was recently honored as Uintah High School's 2003 Alumnus Of The Year.

At the age of 19, after major surgery to improve his walking ability, Lloyd began an accounting business with Garth Atwood. Lloyd eventually bought out Glen Atwood and
ran his own accounting firm for over 25 years, until partnering with Robert Foley. In 1988, Winward & Foley merged with Drollinger & Judd, but that merger was later dissolved. Lloyd was still active in preparing taxes through the 2002 filing deadline.

For over 30 years, he served as contract auditor for Uintah and Duchesne counties, the Ute Tribe, Uintah School District, town of Manila and Vernal City recorder and treasurer from 1947-1952.

Lloyd was asked by Governor George Clyde to serve on a state commitee to formulate a uniform accounting system. Governor Norman Bangerter also appointed him to the Utah Board of Accountamcy where he served for eight years. A member of the Utah Society of Public Accountants since 1951, Lloyd was honored at this association's 1990 Man Of The Year, and recipient of the Utah Society of CPAs Service Award in 2000.

In the civic arena, Lloyd joined the Vernal Lions Club in 1954. In addition to serving as a local club president, he was elected to serve as one of Utah's four district governors. During that assignment, he and Alta traveled thoughout eastern Utah, logged over 30,000 miles meeting with various groups. He was one of four organizers responsible for the Utah Lions Foundation, a foundation that provided funding for the Utah Eye Bank located at the University of Utah Medical Center. Lloyd was also honored as the 1983 Utah State Lion of the Year.

Lloyd was a charter member of the Vernal Chamber of Commerce and Dinah-Mites. He served as president of the local chamber, who honored him with the Outstanding Public Service Award. In 1984, he received the Utah Chamber of Commerce's Total Citizen Award.

Alta and Lloyd worked together to establish the Outlaw Trail Festival and Trail Ride. They also worked to "Save The Tabernacle," which became the Vernal Utah LDS Temple, and they encouraged the building of Vernal's indoor swimming pool. He and his wife also, served on the Uintah Arts Council.

Having deep faith and conviction, Lloyd was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints serving as bishop, stake mission president, high councilmand, YMMIA board member, and the counselor in the Artesia, Colorado, branch presidency.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Lydia Ann Winward (1978); his parents William and Hannah Winward; brothers and sisters Mary Southam, Leora Chivers, Irwin Winward and Gary Winward. He is survived by his wife Alta Rae Weeks Winward; five children and one foster child: Lloyd Lory (Joan) Winward, Tempe, Arizona; Linda Rae (Riley) Skeen, Cody, Wyoming; Lisa Marie Winward, Salt Lake City, Utah; Laura Lee (Kimo) Kaloi, Alexandra, Virginia; Lynn H. (Michelle) Winward, St. Louis, Missouri; DaleAnn Begay (Tillman) Johns, Joseph City, Arizona. His family has also been blessed with 21 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 30, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Vernal Third Ward LDS Chapel, 475 West 100 South, Vernal, Utah. Friends and family may call Thursday, May 29, 2003 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Spafford Funeral Home, 224 East 500 South, Veranl, Utah; and one hour prior to services at the Vernal Third Ward Chapel. New Costume Storage Facility Completed at Western Park

After years and years of kindness extended by Alta & Lloyd Winward and their family in allowing the Arts Council to store costumes, without cost, in a building in downtown Vernal ... changes come and other arrangements must be made. Alta and Lloyd have passed on and the family needed to dispose of the property. With funding help from Uintah Parks and Recreation, a recently completed 1000 square foot costume storage room was built on the mezzanine above the kitchen and office area in the new ice arena bulding at Western Park. The room has nearly 200 linear feet of hanging racks along the walls and includes two small dressing rooms for trying on costumes. With ample open space in the middle of the room for free standing racks, the new facility should house the materials that have been bought and gathered for the past twenty years. Having the costumes so close to the amphitheater will be extremely valuable.

His wifes sister, Louise Weeks Newby died.
