Lucinda Pender was born 1809 in Edgecombe County, NC, the eldest of 3 known surviving children (2 boys/1 girl) born to wealthy planter Solomon Pender and his wife, Mary Batts. She was sister to 2 of Tarboro's most prominent men -- Joseph John Batts "J.J.B" Pender and CSA Capt. Josiah Solomon Pender.

She was the maternal grandchild of John Pender (1702-1818) of Nansemond Co, VA who came to Edgecombe and established Oak Grove Plantation.

Lucinda married Dr. Phesanton Southerland Sugg on January, 9, 1827, when she was 18 years old, and he 22. She became the mother of at least 14 known children (see below):

Dr. Sugg and his family once owned "Penny Hill" on Highway 33 near the Pitt/Edgecombe County line, a community of which little remains today. The doctors James Thigpen III and IV and James Thigpen V and VI all raised the families in Penny Hill. After this, the land and house changed hands to become the possessions of Dr. Phesanton S. Sugg and his son, Dr. George C. Sugg. Their land totaled over 2500 acres.

Luncinda was widowed in 1855 when her husband died at age 49. She survived him another 20 years, passing in 1876 at age 66.
