Joy Baumann, formerly Joy Steele, age 55, died at 6:20 a.m. Tuesday, January 1st, 2008, at her home in Lewistown, Montana.

Joy was born on March 4, 1952 in Mattoon, to Roy Edward and Naomi Joy (Daily) Adair. She married Rick Steele in 1973. He died November 5, 1976. She later married Ron Baumann on February 26, 2000.

Joy lived in East Central Illinois for most of her life, but she visited Central Montana on family vacations during her childhood and in 1998 she decided to make the move to Lewistown. Joy treasured the flat land and cornfields of Illinois as much as the mountains of Montana.

Joy graduated Summa Cum Laude with her bachelor's degree from Eastern Illinois University and then went on to earn a Master's degree and a Specialist's degree. In Illinois, Joy was a teacher for students with learning disabilities. After moving to Montana she was a teacher for students with behavioral problems. Joy had truly found her calling in teaching and she made an amazing and positive difference in the lives of many children. Joy was able to visit 47 of the 50 states and also took the trip of her dreams, to Ireland. Besides traveling, Joy enjoyed animals, interior decorating and reading. Most of all, Joy loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

There will be a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, January 7th, at the Schilling Funeral Home in Mattoon. A memorial service at St. John's Lutheran Church in Mattoon on Tuesday, January 8th, will begin at 4:00 p.m. There will be a private interment for the family at Dodge Grove Cemetery on Wednesday, January 9th.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Camp New Hope or the Ronald McDonald House.
