☘☘☘☘☘☘☘☘

Joseph E. Boyd, Jr. finished his journey on earth and went home to be with the Lord on March 10, 2022 surrounded by his loving family.

Born on March 20, 1931 in Philadelphia, PA he was the oldest son of the late Joseph E. Boyd Sr. and Lydia Purring Boyd. Joe is survived by his brother Rae (husband of Dottie) and nieces and nephews.

He was a graduate of Norristown High School, class of 1948 and Eckels College of Mortuary Science. He served as a Sergeant in the US Army in Alaska as a cryptographer in the Security Agency from 1952-1955.

On December 27, 1952 he married Doris (Miller). She joined him in Alaska and their first daughter was born there.

He began his funeral career with his uncle at the Boyd Funeral Home in Norristown, PA. He relocated to West Chester and shortly thereafter he purchased the Harold A. Famous Funeral Home which was later renamed the Boyd Funeral Home. Joe and his son Robert faithfully served their community until 2006, when they merged with DellaVecchia, Reilly and Smith Funeral Home.

Joe's extensive community service was recognized in 2005 when he was honored with the "West Chester's Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award". Of the many awards Joe received during his lifetime, perhaps none was more important than the Police Academy's "Hero of the Year Award" for saving a man from a burning boat. Joe's heart for the Boy Scouts of America is highlighted by his 3 terms as the Council President and the awarding of the Silver Beaver Buckle Award. Joe served the Gideons faithfully for 60 years.

Joe and Doris' greatest joy is their family. They have 4 children: Deborah (wife of Donald Asplen), Joanne (wife of David Mendenhall), Joseph Scott (husband of Dana) and Robert. They are blessed with ten grandchildren (Brian, Melissa, Victoria, Jonathon, Renee, Daniel, Tara, Joey, Bradford and Caley) and 18 great grandchildren (Mary Grace, Ella, Sweden, Britain, Scotland, Weston, Svea, Carson, Nora, Stella, Theodore, Audrey, Libby, Piper, Aubrianne, Adaleigh, Caden and Gavin).

Services will be held on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 at the DellaVecchia, Reilly, Smith and Boyd Funeral Home located at 410 North Church Street in West Chester. A calling time will be offered from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 followed by a service beginning at 10:00 a.m. Internment will directly follow at the Birmingham Lafayette Cemetery. - DellaVecchia, Reilly, Smith & Boyd Funeral Home website March 2022.
