He had not been ill and his death was a great shock to his family and friends. He had done the morning chores and came to the house to complain of being "just give out" but returned to his morning work where his son, J.B. Jr., found him dead a few minutes later, making the transition to the other world while alone.
He was converted when he was 18 years old and joined the Baptist church. He was a devoted christian and useful citizen in the community. At the time of his passing he was a deacon in the Addington Baptist Church where he had been a member several years.
John Clayton married Mrs. Carrie Phillips at Wellington, Texas, Jan. 29, 1908. Six girls and three boys were born to them and they and their mother mourn the death of a devoted husband and father.
In 1908 the Claytons moved to Bridgeport and in 1919 to Waurika which has since been his home.
Children of the family are: Mrs. Alma Houston, Mrs. Eula Faye Scott, Pete and David Clayton of Waurika; Mrs. Ruth Houston, Somerton, Ariz., Mrs. George Goodgion, Needles, Calif., Mrs. Alvin Brewer, Bethany; Mrs. Lilly Marney, Fort Worth and J.B. of the home address.
There were also 27 grandchildren and a great grandchild , his mother, Mrs. C.D. Clayton of Comanche, three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Emily Houston, Mrs. Leda Murray, Joe and David of Comanche and Mrs. Belle Barnett, of Waurika, who survive.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 21, at 2:30 o'clock at the Addington Baptist church. Interment was in the Addington cemetery.
Kind and helpful he is going to be sadly missed as he had a gentle word, and cheerful smile for all.
We have lost a good husband, father and neighbor but shall meet him again some day to part no more.
