John Haggerty, in coal business

John F. Haggerty, 69, of Pone Lane, Franklin RD 1, died in the Franklin Hospital Sunday.

He was born in Reynoldsville March 1, 1913, a son of Thomas and Jennie Ketzel Haggerty.

Mr. Haggerty followed a family tradition of work in the coal business and was employed as a salesman for King Coal Sales. His father was active in the coal business and was adviser to John L. Lewis and President Theodore Roosevelt during the United Mine Workers strike in 1900.

Mr. Haggerty moved here from Brooklyn Park, Md., six years ago and particularly enjoyed hobbies of hunting and fishing.

He was married to the former Eula Brown Oct. 18, 1931, and she survives, along with one daughter, Mrs. C.L. (Nancy) Maxon of Franklin; three grandchildren, Frederick L. and Jill L. Maxon of Franklin; Matthew D. Maxon of Sedalia, Mo.; one great-grand-daughter, Jessica Maxon of Sedalia, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth McKinney of Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs. Kathryn Armagost of Reynoldsville, and one brother, Andrew Haggerty of Indiana, Pa.

One son, John Frederick Haggerty Jr., died in October 1944.

Friends may call at the Robert W. Gardinier Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with the Rev. John R. Snyder, pastor of St. Patrick's Church, officiating. Entombment will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens.
