James Tildon "Pro" Ezell was born on March 4, 1920 at home on Ezell Road in Nashville, Tennessee, the son of Harry "Buford" Ezell (1894–1935) and Mary Irene (Jackson) Ezell (1900–1928).

He was a 1941 graduate of Antioch High School where he played basketball and football. He enlisted in the US Army on November 14, 1941 and was discharged on December 9, 1945. A decorated Combat Calvary officer of World War II, he served 42 of his 49 months with the US Army in the South Pacific and received the American Defense Service Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, AP Theater Ribbon and World War II Victory Ribbon.

He was working at W T Stringfellow Company, when he was married 1st on November 27, 1946 at Grandview Baptist Church as the 1st husband of Mary "Lorene" Coleman (1918–1983), the daughter of James Sharber Coleman (1883–1959) and Laura Viola (Haywood) Coleman (1884–1956). James and Mary later divorced, and both remarried: James was married 2nd to Bonnie Doskey, and Mary was married 2nd to Gifford Kelly.

James was a professional horse trainer, rider and instructor and living in New Orleans, Louisiana since about 1977. He was 88 years old when he passed away on May 4, 2008 at Canon Hospice.

Survivors included his widow Bonnie, two stepdaughters, sister Martha Tune and brother-in-law James Tune and two grandchildren.


His obituary at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in New Orleans listed Memorial Services at Saint Luke Methodist Church in New Orleans on May 10, 2008 and inurnment in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum in New Orleans. AND THEN, his obituary in THE TENNESSEAN on June 6, 2008 listed Memorial Services on June 7th at Meades Chapel Church of Christ on Antioch Pike in Nashville, and burial in Wheeler Cemetery in Nashville. A phone call to Lake Lawn Park in New Orleans on March 2, 2022 confirmed that he was in an urn in their Mausoleum.
