Harry was the third of three sons born to Spangler R. and Sarah Ann (McCarty) Gipe. His older brothers were Charles and Georgie.

He was first married to Clara B. (unknown) in 1899 and they divorced March 19, 1901. She was born June 1875 in Indiana.

Harry married Martha J. Bull, daughter of Oliver Perry and Elizabeth (Crowden) Bull on December 15, 1909 in Tippecanoe County Indiana. They had one son, Russell.

His grandparents were William and Esther (Whitehead) McCarty. Great grandparents were James and Sarah (Wood) Whitehead.

Harry Gipe, 65, lifelong resident of this county, and at one time employed in the circulation department of the old Lafayette Evening Courier, died Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at the family home, 1822 East Main Street. Born on McCarty Lane, east of Lafayette, his earlier life was spent in farming. He moved to this city in 1905. For several years he had been engaged in managing his farms.
On December 15, 1909, he married Martha J. Bull. He was a member of Congress Street Methodist Church, also the Dayton K. of P. Lodge, Wabash Tribe, Redmen Lodge and T. P. A. Besides his widow he leaves a son, Russell Gipe, at home.
Friends may call at the Rogers and Henderson funeral home after noon Friday. Services there Saturday at 2:30 p.m.; Rev. E. W. Nugent and Rev. C. L. Harper officiating. Burial in Dayton Cemetery.
