Spangler married Sarah Ann McCarty February 16, 1870 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. They had three sons, Charles, Georgie and Harry Gipe.

Spangler R. Gipe
Spangler R. Gipe died at 7:30 o'clock last evening at the family residence, 1821 Jackson Street. His death was caused by stomach trouble. Mr. Gipe was 75 year old and leaves a widow and one son, Perry Gipe. The deceased was a retired farmer, a man of integrity and was held in high esteem as a man and citizen. The funeral will be conducted from the residence on Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock and the interment will be made in the Dayton cemetery.
Note: obit lists son as Perry but his name was Harry.
