She was preceded in death by her parents, Agnes and Sherrard G. Nott; and her siblings and in-laws, Walter and Patricia B Nott, Kathleen and Homer W. Handy, Suzanne Gerin, Sherrard Nott and Francis H. Nott Jr.
Mary Nick is survived by her loving husband of nearly 55 years, John R. Saunders Jr.; and four devoted children, Jacqueline (Frank) Mayfield, John Rudolph (Elizabeth) Saunders III, Bridget (Brian) Losch and Valerie (Derek) Poh. Affectionately known as "Nino" to her 11 grandchildren, she delighted in every moment they shared. They are Patrick, Anne Barrett and Bridget Mayfield, Eliza Grace and John Saunders, Brian, Mary Margaret and Peter Losch, and Anna Burke, Evalyn and Frederick Poh. Some of the great pleasures of Mary Nick's life included porch conversations, sunsets and river house traditions at the Nomini Bay along with the annual family trip to Atlantic Beach, N.C.
Mary Nick grew up in Ginter Park attending St. Paul's Catholic Church where she was a lifelong member. She and her sisters danced with Julia Mildred Harper School of Dance, an activity Mary Nick loved and followed her all her days. She graduated from Marymount High School and attended Marymount University in Arlington, Va. With a heart for home that grew exponentially with time, she returned home to work in the mortgage department at Life of Virginia. She met her husband shortly thereafter. They built a beautiful life in a tightly woven family whose threads are sure to stand the test of time because of their example.
Mary Nick was mother to many more than her four children including her nieces, nephews, sons and daughter-in-law, children's friends and many more. Notably when she lost two sisters three weeks apart in 1997, she inherited seven more children immediately. She rose to every occasion with arms wide open and a loving smile.
Mary Nick had the rare ability to be the life of any party and simultaneously the voice of reason. Everyone was safe of soul, mind and body in her presence. We will miss her beyond measure. For her, we will let the joy of her life break through the heavy sadness that is upon us. Please pray for us. Mary Nick is surely praying for us all.
