Along with many of his relatives and his parents, while still young David moved to Mercer County, Illinois.

After he was married, David and Belle first established a farm in Mercer Country, Illinois and there their first two daughters were born, Ella and Stella. While these daughters were still small, he and Belle moved to Ringgold County, Iowa where they resided for a few years.

David had a club foot and was heavy on his feet. Many Landreths upon reaching adulthood suffered from foot trouble of one kind or another. Tender, aching feet with broken arches has been an inheritance of many of the Landreth descendants. David, being a farmer was greatly inconvenienced by his feet as it was difficult and sometimes dangerous for him to care for his stock and do the work required on a farm.

After David's brother Lewis moved to California he wrote back such glowing reports of that state, David and Belle decided to follow Lewis Landreth westward to the Pacific Coast. They settled on a small ranch near Whittier, Los Angeles, California.

David died at the age of 55 years. A visitor to the Mt. Olive Cemetery in Whittier, California in 1953 reported that David and Belle's gravestones had been overturned and the dates were unreadable.
