William Moffatt Grier, Jr., son of Rev. William Moffatt Grier, D.D. and the former Miss Nancy Morgan McMorries, was born in Due West, South Carolina; where his father was President of Erskine College.

In 1900, William married Miss Maude McGinnis, daughter of of E. D. McGinnis and Laura McDowell. There were no known children born to this union.
