Peggy LaJune Phelps departed this world for her Heavenly home on January 9, 2022 surrounded by family at her home in Duncan.
The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, January 11, between 5:30-7:00P.M. at Whitt Funeral Home. Services are scheduled for Wednesday, January 12, at 1:30 P.M. at First Baptist Church Duncan with Rev. Bryan Pain officiating. Interment will follow in the Duncan Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Whitt Funeral Home.
Peggy was born February 15, 1930 in Ryan, Oklahoma to Floyd and Marie Tow. One of nine children, she enjoyed her early years on the family farm in Sugden, Oklahoma. After graduating from Sugden High School, Peggy went on to attend Chickasha Women's College. On August 13, 1949 she married the love of her life, Alton Phelps, and enjoyed every moment of their 72 years together until her passing. They raised two sons, Mike and Gary Phelps, in Waurika, Oklahoma. The family moved to Coffeyville, Kansas for several years before settling in Duncan in 1982. Peggy was a member of First Baptist Church and volunteered in her Sunday School class. Over the years, she also worked for Haggar Slacks as a seamstress, ran her own business raising and selling parakeets, volunteered at her church in Coffeyville and was also a volunteer at Duncan Regional Hospital.
Peggy loved vegetable gardening and growing flowers. In spring and summer, one could always find her tending her gorgeous iris beds and delivering large sacks of tomatoes and cucumbers to friends and family. She loved watching for the different birds who would visit her bird feeders at her country home, and hated watching the squirrels steal the bird food. Peggy also enjoyed sewing clothes for her grandchildren, painting and making many different types of crafts. After Alton's retirement, they spent many years taking trips in their RV all over the United States. She would light up with joy telling stories about her traveling adventures with Alton. Peggy loved her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchild with all of her heart, and had a soft spot for every child she ever met.
Peggy is survived by her husband, Alton; son, Mike and partner Pam; grandchildren: Jennifer Klinkhammer and husband Scott, Elijah Phelps, Bodacia Phelps, and great-grandchild, Gary Black; siblings, Jack Tow and wife Betty Sue, Phillip Tow and wife Gaynell, and Gwen Cox.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Gary Phelps; siblings, Larry Tow, Phyllis Cogdill, Donella Howard, Maurice Tow and Dwayne Tow.
