Lloyd E. Grimes, 90, of Audubon, formerly of Adair, Iowa, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2009, at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa.

Lloyd Edward Grimes was born on December 6, 1918, on the family farm in Guthrie County, Iowa, the son of Floyd R. and Emily Margaret (Elgin) Grimes. He attended school in Guthrie County and graduated from Adair High School in 1936. Following high school he attended sheet metal school in California. Lloyd was drafted into the United States Army Air Corps on February 3, 1943. He served his country as a Sergeant during WWII. Lloyd was a belly gunner and flew 65 missions over France and Germany. He was awarded four Bronze Stars, a good conduct medal and an OLC Air Medal. Lloyd looked forward to the yearly reunion with his flying buddies.

After being honorably discharged from Air Corps, he returned home to see his parents for a short time, before starting his career in 1945 as a mechanic for TWA in Kansas City, Missouri. Lloyd's employment continued until his retirement in 1980.

He was married to Helen June Thomson for 25 years. After she passed away on November 19, 2006, he returned to Iowa, living in Adair and Audubon.

Lloyd was very proud of his service to his country. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion in Audubon, IA.
Some if his favorite memories include the times he spent fishing with this son. Other hobbies included gardening, working in his yard, and traveling.

Lloyd is survived by his son, Ricky Grimes of Shelby, Iowa, his nieces and nephews; his great-nieces and nephews; and his great-great-nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen; his brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Evelyn Grimes.

Graveside services with military rites will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 31, 2009, at the Sunnyhill Cemetery in Adair, Iowa.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services on Saturday, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., at Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Adair.
