John Tipton Whitman was a farmer and member of the Primitive Baptist Church. He undoubtedly met his wife, Rebecca Reneau, in Blue River Township, Harrison County, Indiana as both their families were living there in the 1830's and 1840's. About 1842, Rebecca's parents, Fleming & Sarah Reneau, removed to Fulton County, Illinois with most of their family. It appears that John followed Rebecca and they were wed in Fulton County and remained there for a few years. About 1847 they came back to Harrison Co., Indiana, and in 1852 moved to Clay County, Illinois, settling in Songer Township, where John's eldest sister Elizabeth was living.

Their marriage is recorded in both Harrison Co., Indiana and Fulton Co., Illinois.

From the writings of Nellie Tate Moore in 1953:
"Clarence Whitman, eldest son of uncle John & aunt Sarah Whitman who now lives near Coffeen, Ill. on a farm, has the old family Bible which belonged to Grandpa & Grandma Whitman & it has the recrods of all the children & grandchildren. Dates of births, marriages & deaths.
"John T. Whitman (Grandpa), Uncle Wm. Riley were schoolteachers. Also Charlie, Hattie & Grace of Uncle Dolph's & Hallie of Uncle John's, Nellie & her daughter Leo Thelma & Wade Higgason her husband & Devona, Buren's wife."
