Melvina Akay was born 2-9-1868 in Chelsea Michigan the third child of four daughters born to Henry and Eliza (Howlett) Akay.

The 1870 Census has her living in the Village of Cheslea, Washinaw County, Michigan.

In 1875 Eliza died and the 4 girls went to different families to be raised. Nettie, Addie and Melvina were raised by direct family members. All that can be found about Ella's early life is living with the James P. Wood family in Chelsea, MI. Some of the documents researched on her have her name as Ella M. Akay and some May E. Wood. Research will continue on this issue to see if she was legally adopted by the Wood family.

The 1880 Census has them in the Waterloo Area.
Nettie went to live with her Grandmother Mary Howlett. Nettie was teaching school at that time.
Vina with her Uncle Samuel West and his wife and daughter. She was attending school.
At this time it is not known where Addie was.

In 1887 Melvina married William E. West. For several years they lived in Stockbridge, Michigan. In the mid 1890's they moved to a farm on Dexter Trail near Dansville, Michigan. They both lived there until their deaths.

To this union was born 8 children. 5 sons and 3 daughters. One daughter, Mildred died at 4 months old. The other children survived them.

William died 5-12-1936.
Melvina died 7-27-1939.

They are both buried in the Howard Cemetery, Ingham Township, Ingham County, Michigan.

Two of their sons, a infant daughter and two grandchildren are also buried there.

DANSVILLE WOMAN DEAD OF PARALYTIC STROKE

Mrs. Will West, 71, died Wednesday morning at her home two miles south of Dansville near Howards Corners following a stoke of paralysis about three months ago. Mrs. West had lived at Dansville for the past 40 years. She resided in Stockbridge following her marriage. Mr. West died in 1936. Surviving are seven children. Roy, Flora, Olin, Mrs. Rita Meyers and Charles of Dansville. Roland of Holt and Guy of Leslie. 16 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mrs. West was born in Michigan in 1869. Before her marriage she was Melvina Akay.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at two-o'clock at the home with burial in Howard cemetery.
