David Joseph Thoennes, 82, of Lafayette, IN, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 16, 2021.

He was born on January 23, 1939 in Lafayette, IN to the late Charles S. and Alberta (Boes) Thoennes.

David attended St. Lawrence Elementary School and 3 years at Jefferson High School before graduating from Central Catholic High School in the first graduating class of 1958. He enlisted in the United States Army and served his country from 1958 to 1960. Upon retuning to Lafayette, David began and apprenticeship as a plumber and pipe fitter for 5 years.

On September 1, 1962, he married Elise Wright at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Lafayette, IN.

David worked for Union Local 157 as a plumber and pipe fitter. After retiring, he worked for Laborers Union 274.

He was a lifetime parishioner of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. David was a member of the German-American Club, where he was able to honor his German heritage, and a 49 year member of the Moose Lodge. He also belonged to several bowling leagues.

Dave and Elise enjoyed dancing, especially when a live band was performing. He made the Polkacello instrument and would play at weddings, parties and GermanFest where he was known as "Polkacello Dave."

David had a great personality, loved to socialize, and was a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle and friend.

Surviving are his wife; three children; five siblings; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Charles Howard Thoennes; two sisters, infant Carolyn Thoennes and Mary Haan; and one brother, Jack Thoennes.

The family would like to thank the staff at Rosewalk Village for their excellent care and friendship.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at 2 PM at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Visitation will be held prior to Mass from 1 to 2 PM. Private burial will be in Union Cemetery in Clarks Hill, IN.
