Janis Meade McGann passed away peacefully on December 4, 2021, with her adoring husband of fifty years and her loving daughter by her side.

She is survived by her husband, Andy McGann and her daughter, Katie McGann Dolan. She had a special relationship with her "favorite son-in-law," Patrick Dolan and she was an adoring "Nana" to Jack and Drew. She also leaves behind Michael and Marty, her two younger brothers.

Janis was born on November 24, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, to Ina (Williams) and Gerald Meade, as the eldest of three children. She loved living close to Lake Michigan and was a city-girl at heart. She graduated from Immaculata High School in 1966, where she made many life-long friendships. Janis attended Loyola University - Chicago where she studied Nursing. She was a member of the Theta Phi sorority.

Janis joined the Navy in 1970 where she was chosen by the Pentagon to be in the first Nurse Practitioner program. During that time, she was based in San Diego where she cared for soldiers who were returning from the Vietnam War. At one point, she was overseeing 1500 beds in her ward. Another responsibility that Janis had was preparing the sick Officers Quarters for the first group of Vietnam Prisoners of War (POWs). She was a part of the medical support team for a Blue Angels Air Show at Naval Air Station Miramar. Janis was very proud of her experience in the military and honored to be selected to attend the "first" joint military/civilian Nurse Practitioners program in the state of California, sponsored by the University of California San Diego Medical School.

It was in San Diego where Janis reconnected with Andy McGann, after they both had graduated from Loyola. Janis would joke about how Andy would visit her Bachelor Officer's Quarters apartment and eat all the food in her tiny refrigerator. On their first date to the San Diego Zoo, she grabbed him by the hand and said, "I'm hungry and you need to feed me." Andy bought her a hotdog and the rest is history.

Andy and Janis married in Chicago on October 9, 1971, right after he returned from Vietnam. The Navy stationed Janis in Memphis, Tennessee, at Millington Naval Hospital. This is the same place that their daughter Katie was born. The family moved to St. Louis, Missouri, for Andy's job with McDonnell Douglas when Katie was a toddler. Janis called St. Louis home for over 40 years.

Janis dedicated her life to being an amazing mother. Her nursing skills were put to the test when Katie was ill for most of her kindergarten year. She spent months at a time sleeping on a chair in Katie's hospital room. When it was time for Katie to go to first grade, Janis volunteered to be the school nurse at St. Monica. This ensured that she would be close in case her daughter needed her. As it turned out, Janis was one of the school nurses for the next eight years!

Janis wore many hats as a mother. She was a Girl Scout leader, room mother, and even the eighth-grade videographer for Katie's yearbook. She was a selfless volunteer who was always happy to help others. She loved having "bonus daughters" who were Katie's best friends over the years.

She went back to work when Katie was in high school. For several years, Janis provided private health care to elderly individuals. She then returned to the excitement of hospital life by working in the ER of Christian Hospital for over 10 years. She went on to manage the two Take Care Clinics through Walgreens and retired from there in 2014. Janis loved the medical field and learning. She is a Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner through 2024.

Andy and Janis are an example of unconditional love. Married over 50 years, they spent all of their time with each other. They enjoyed the simple things like sharing their morning coffee and going out to dinner. They also loved to see the world together, traveling to places such as Hong Kong, Bangkok Thailand, Japan, Egypt, France, Italy, Mexico, Jamaica, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Alaska and their favorite, Maui. They were best friends. Being with Andy was her favorite way to spend time.

Janis described that two of the biggest thrills of her life were being in the delivery room when her grandsons were born. She doted on Jack (age 13) and Drew (age 11) and spent as much time with them as possible. She attended sporting events, sacraments, school programs, and every birthday party. Janis created many memories with her family including a vacation to Disney World, annual pumpkin carving parties, and the traditions she established for Christmas Eve.

After being diagnosed in August with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer, Janis fought bravely. She underwent a full left leg amputation in attempt to remove the tumor. She worked diligently at the Mercy Rehabilitation Center to build her strength to go home. She was able to go home for three weeks. Sadly, on November 15 it was revealed that the cancer had spread all over her body.

The family felt fortunate to find Evelyn's House, a hospice care center where Janis spent her final 16 days. She was able to have visitors who shared stories, their love for her, and how she had impacted their lives. The many cards, flowers, and prayers lifted her spirits and brought a smile to her face. Janis knew how much she was loved.

Janis will be remembered for many things, especially her warm smile and infectious laughter.

The staff at Evelyn's House took exceptional care of the entire family. In lieu of flowers and at Janis's request, donations may be made to via BJC Hospice to Evelyn's House.
