William Alexander Pogue was born in Birmingham and grew up in Norwood, attended Norwood Methodist Church, and graduated from Norwood Grammar School and Phillips High School. During WWII, he was in Naval Air Corps training. After the War, he went to the USMA, graduating in 1950. He left for Korea in July 1950 with the Third Infantry Division, was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor, and retired a captain.

After military service, he was with Chicago Bridge & Iron for 35 years, retiring as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. He was on the corporate boards of Bethlehem Steel, Nalco Chemical, Hess Oil, and Northern Trust Bank. He served as trustee of Rush Presbyterian, St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago, and trustee of Marion Military Institute. His favorite motto to his company was "Just do what you say you will do".

Bill is survived by daughter Susan Pogue McNamara (Bham), grandchildren Keith Alexander McNamara (CO) and Claire Lorraine McNamara (KY), and numerous nephews and nieces.
