Lydia was a young child when her Farther, Charles W. Beale married Sarah Jane Brown of Eugene, Lane Co, OR in 1881. Lydia always felt she was a full sister of Roy, Ella, Maude and Lena, and would get very upset if she was referred to as a "half-sister".
After Lydia's husband was killed in a train accident, she moved to Long Beach, California where she supported herself and daughter by doing seamstress work. Through the years she always sent her niece, Sarah Jane Bennett, dresses she had made for her.
