Pinal County Sheriff's Office detectives are one step closer to solving the 2004 murder of Doctor Alfonso Puyana. Puyana's body was found by hikers at the base of Casa Grande Mountain on April 24, 2004. The victim was found in his underwear and had been shot multiple times.
Sheriff Paul Babeu said, "Several investigative leads have been followed up by different detectives over the past 12 years, but we have had no actionable information that we could use to make an arrest. Now, in 2016, we have been able to re-examine forensic evidence with today's technology and are one step closer to identifying the person or persons responsible for Doctor Puyana's death. Sheriff Babeu went on to say, "After all these years, we believe that there is still someone out there [who] knows something about this murder and has yet to come forward. We encourage anyone in the community with information about this murder to come forward and speak to our detectives. We owe it to the family of Doctor Puyana to keep working this case until it is solved."
Anyone with information regarding this case or involved persons should call the Pinal County Sheriff's Office at 520-866-5111.

Egyptian author eyed in Arizona slaying
CASA GRANDE, Ariz., Sept. 20 , 2004 (UPI) -- A controversial author who has linked the Saudi royal family to terrorism has come under the scrutiny of Arizona homicide detectives.
The Arizona Republic said Monday that Emad ElSirgany, author of "The Defilers: Sowing the Seeds of Terrorism," gave up fingerprints and DNA samples to Pinal County sheriff's deputies investigating the shooting death of Dr. Alfonso Puyana.
ElSirgany told the Republic he never heard of the late physician and may have been targeted for his political leanings. ElSirgany's book contends the Saudi royals actively fund terrorism because they are seeking revenge for an alleged CIA role in the 1975 assassination of King Faisal.
The Republic said ElSirgany claims to be a former Egyptian intelligence officer who now works as a truck driver in Arizona.
Sheriff's officials would not comment on how ElSirgany came into their investigation. Puyana's body was found last spring in the Casa Grande Mountains.
