3349 Private A Blythe, 2nd Battalion the Essex Regiment. The Battalion was sent from India to South Africa in Dec 1901, and were deployed on the blockhouse line east of Tafel Kop (in the north-east corner of the Orange River Colony) under Brigadier General E O Hamilton. During Jan-Feb 1902 great drives were taking place in that district, which made the holding of the containing lines an arduous and responsible task. Private Blythe died of enteric fever (typhoid) at 29 Stationary Hospital, Heilbron, Orange River Colony on 10 Mar 1902. He was buried the same day. He is also commemorated on the Essex Regiment Boer War memorial in Bell Meadow, Bellmead, Chelmsford, Essex, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/158582/) and on the Essex Regiment Boer War memoril plaque in the Essex Regimental Chapel, Warley, Brentwood, Essex, England (see: https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/2248).
