Mr. Martin L. Barringer Entered Into Rest Last Night--A Long Sickness--A Peaceful End.
Mr. Martin L. Barringer, one of the best known and most highly esteemed citizens of Charlotte, "passed over the river" last night at 9 o'clock, at his home on North Graham street. Mr. Barringer was stricken with paralysis in August, 1889, and never was himself again. This month a year ago he had a second stroke, and never afterward left his bed. For months he has lain there helpless, his body here but his spirit practically in the great beyond. Several times it was thought he could not survive more than a day or night, but with wonderful vitality he clung to life, and the going was so quiet, so peaceful, it was hardly perceptible.
Martin Barringer was born August 12, 1825, and was therefore 70 years of age. He was a native of Cabarrus county. His early life was spent in that county. At the age of 16 years he went to Concord to clerk for Baldy Moss. From there he went to Arkansas, where he spent a couple of years. On his return East he came to Charlotte, which was about 40 years ago. He clerked for some months for Brem & Steele. During the war he was in the railroad office in Raleigh, and afterward in Charlotte. Immediately after the war he commenced merchandising in Charlotte. The firm was composed of Marshall Alexander, Samuel C. Wolfe and Mr. Barringer. Afterward the firm became Barringer, Wolfe & Trotter, and afterward Barringer & Trotter.
Mr. Barringer was thrice married. First to Miss J. T. Cannon, of Poplar Tent, in 1852; in 1862 to Miss A. S. Alexander, and in 1867 to Miss U. C. McCorkle, his present wife, who, with two children, Mr. W. M. Barringer, of this city, and Mrs. E. B. Watts, of Winston, survive him.
Deceased was for many years a communicant of the First Presbyterian church. He was a conscientious, godly man; an honest merchant, an unpretentious, law-abiding citizen and a devoted father and husband.
The funeral services will be conducted from the residence Sunday morning, the hour to be named later.
