COLONEL OGDEN EDWARDS DEAD

Funeral Service to Be Held From St. Peter's Church Today.

Was Great Nephew of Benjamin Franklin; Great Grandson of Jonathan Edwards.

Col. Ogden E. Edwards died yesterday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock at the Mercy hospital, death being due to an attack of bronchitis. He was taken ill about two weeks ago and enfeebled as he was from age and infirmity, hadn't the strength to combat disease. He was taken to the hospital Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Edwards, who was broken down with nursing, accompanying him.

It was realized yesterday morning that colonel Edwards could not recover, his strength having failed fast during the night. His immediate family was with him when the end came. The body was removed to the undertaking establishment of J. M. Barry & Co. Mrs. Edwards returned to the home of Dr. Annie Alexander, where she and Colonel Edwards have always made their home when in Charlotte.

The funeral service will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal church tomorrow afternoon at 3:30, and will be conducted by Rev. E. A. Osborne, assisted by Rev. Robert A. Tufft, rector of the church. The interment will be in Elmwood cemetery. Acting as pallbearers will be Dr. W. J. Martin, president of Davidson college; Robert A. Dunn, Dr. John Hill Tucker, Heriot Clarkson, J. Frank Wilkes, and J. Renwick Wilkes.

The passing of Colonel Edward removes a man of high intellectual and social note, in this state, where for 30 years or more he had made his home. He was born in New York state, March 23, 1829, and was therefore, 89 years of age. He was a son of Ogden E. Edwards and Catherine Shepherd, the latter of Northampton, Mass. Colonel Edwards was descended from several of the most distinguished families in America. He was a great nephew of Benjamin Franklin, and a great grandson of Jonathan Edwards, the great preacher and scholar of New England, of colonial days. He was also a descendant of Governor Bradford, who came over in the Mayflower and became the first governor of the Plymouth colony. On another side of the house he was descended from Governor Ogden, who founded the colony which afterwards became the state of New Jersey.

Colonel Edwards was a man of the highest intellectuality and of beauty of culture and refinement of speech which emphasized the high lineage which was his heritage. He was learned and wise. He had traveled the world over and during the 50s and 60s resided in Manila, holding a high official position there. Able in mind, pure in spirit, highminded and noble in every fiber of his being, he was a man who commanded the highest recognition in the days when he gave himself and his talents to the world of letters, of social and official life, on both sides of the water. He was a Chesterfield in manner, a courtly, graceful, gracious gentleman, who came from the first folk of the land.

He was twice married. by his first marriage he has two children surviving: Mrs. J. Warren Rogers, who arrived here Saturday, and a son, O. Ellery Edwards, of New York city, who, with Mr. Rogers, will arrive here today.

His second wife was Miss Mollie Goodlace, a member of the faculty of the old Presbyterian college under the late Rev. Dr. Atkinson. There were no children by the second marriage.

Colonel Edwards' sister, Miss Annie Edwrads, died in this city last February. For 39 years Colonel and Mrs. Edwards resided at blowing Rock in the summers, and Charlotte in the winters.

In faith Colonel Edwards was an Episcopalian, and was very loyal to the tenets of that faith.
