Benedetto "Joe" Merciai was the son of Guiseppe Paolo Merciai and Marie Jole Gallani. He was born in Potenza, Italy and came to America on the 7th of March 1907. He became a U.S. citizen in 1910.
Benedetto married Carrie Balasco on the 25th of July in 1909. Together they had seven children: Julia Merciai Franco, Iola Merciai Gschwendtner, Amelia Merciai Eicher, Paul Louis Merciai, Emma Merciai Santopietro, Mary Merciai Pagliaroli, and Josephine Merciai Hite.
"Joe" as the family and friends called him, was noted for the way he dressed. His suits fitted him to perfection and he was always neat. He worked as a taylor in the Louis Bergman Department store for over 20 years.
On the 19th of June he passed away after a brief illness. Family story is that he died on his way to work from a ruptured appendix but archived Altoona Mirror articles showed that he was in and out of the hospital several times prior and and that his death could have been heart related.
